The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Inga Rhonda King (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines):

The deployment of more women police officers is key to enhancing the effectiveness of United Nations peace operations, speakers told the Security Council during a 4 November videoconference meeting, highlighting the importance of a gender balance in community outreach, patrol and confidence-building.

As COVID-19 and climate change exacerbate poverty and other drivers of conflict, it is ever more urgent that security, development and human rights be addressed in an integrated manner, speakers told the Security Council today in a video-teleconferenced open debate.

Following are UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s remarks, as prepared for delivery, to the Security Council debate on “Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace:  Contemporary Drivers of Conflict and Insecurity”, held today:

The Security Council agenda for November will feature a high-level meeting on contemporary drivers of conflict and insecurity, such as climate change and underdevelopment, the organ’s President for the month said during a video press briefing today.

On 2 November 2020, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1533 (2004) concerning the Democratic Republic of the Congo amended the list entry of the following individual included on its list of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze and travel ban set out in paragraphs 1 to 6 of resolution 2293 (2016), as renewed by paragraph 1 of resolution 2528 (2020), adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations:

October’s Security Council meetings focused on signature matters like the situation in the Middle East, as well as the women, peace and security agenda, Council President Vassily A. Nebenzia (Russian Federation) said today at a press conference to sum up the month’s activities.

The Security Council decided to extend the mandate of the United Nations peace operation in Western Sahara for one year today, with the voting results announced by videoconference, in accordance with the temporary silence procedure adopted for the COVID-19 pandemic.
