SECRETARY-GENERAL ‘APPALLED’ BY CAR BOMB ATTACK IN ISRAEL, URGES


‘ALL PALESTINIAN GROUPS’ TO STOP SUCH ACTS OF VIOLENCE


This is the text of a statement today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General is appalled by the terrorist car bomb attack in northern Israel earlier today in which at least 14 persons were killed and many others injured.

SECURITY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS CRITICAL ROLE OF WOMEN AND GIRLS IN BUILDING PEACE


Women and girls must have a greater role in peace processes and must be brought to the negotiating table more systematically, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan said in a report to the Security Council, issued today.

IRAQ TO BEGIN RETURNING KUWAITI ARCHIVES TO KUWAIT ON 19 OCTOBER


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


Tomorrow, Saturday, 19 October, Iraq will commence returning to Kuwait the Kuwaiti archives, which were taken by Iraq following its occupation of Kuwait in 1990.  The modalities for the transfer were arranged with Iraq and Kuwait by the United Nations in August 2002.
