Following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message, delivered by Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa (UNOWA), on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in Abuja, today:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Catherine Pollard of Guyana, Under-Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management, as the new Coordinator for Multilingualism, in implementation of General Assembly resolution 69/250.  In this role, Ms. Pollard is responsible for coordinating the overall implementation of multilingualism Secretariat-wide.  This appointment is made pursuant to General Assembly resolutions 54/64 of 1999 and 61/266 of 2007 on the appointment of a senior official as coordinator of questions relating to multilingualism.
