SECRETARY-GENERAL GRAVELY CONCERNED AT ESCALATION OF VIOLENCE IN ISRAEL

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

Secretary-General Kofi Annan departed New York on Saturday, 24 March, arriving in Amman, Jordan, on Sunday night, to attend the Summit Meeting of the League of Arab States, which was due to begin on Tuesday, 27 March.

It is an honour to join you.  Let me express my gratitude to His Majesty King Abdullah for his hospitality, wise leadership and strong support of the United Nations.

The Secretary-General travelled to Washington, D.C., on Friday afternoon,  23 March, for his first meeting with United States President George W. Bush and senior members of his Administration.
