AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN’S FUND (UNICEF)

Following consultations with the UNICEF Executive Board, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today announced the appointment of Ann M. Veneman, Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, as the new Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Mauritius from the Maldives islands on Monday, 10 January.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in the Maldive islands on Sunday, 9 January, from Sri Lanka. It was the third and last of the earthquake- and tsunami-affected countries he would visit on this trip.

The Secretary-General today announced the appointment of David Veness of the United Kingdom as Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security.  He has been serving as Assistant Commissioner, Specialist Operations in the Metropolitan Police Service in London since April 1994.
