SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS ANN M. VENEMAN, UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF AGRICULTURE,


AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN’S FUND (UNICEF)


Following consultations with the UNICEF Executive Board, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today announced the appointment of Ann M. Veneman, Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, as the new Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS PALESTINIAN TERROR ATTACK ON ISRAELI CIVILIANS


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General condemns the Palestinian terror attack that caused the death of six Israeli civilians and injury to four others at the Karni crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip yesterday evening.  He wishes to express his deepest condolences to the families of those killed and injured.

SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS DAVID VENESS OF UNITED KINGDOM

 

AS UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR SAFETY AND SECURITY

 


The Secretary-General today announced the appointment of David Veness of the United Kingdom as Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security.  He has been serving as Assistant Commissioner, Specialist Operations in the Metropolitan Police Service in London since April 1994.
