Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appointed Brigadier Rezaqul Haider of Bangladesh as Chief Military Liaison Officer of the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET). Brigadier Haider will assume the post shortly.

GENEVA, 23 June (UN Information Service) -- United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson has approved, on behalf of the Secretary-General, grants amounting to $5.1 million to organizations supporting victims of torture.
ADDIS ABABA, 24 June (ECA) -- While the United Nations has made a substantial difference in delivering its mandate over its five decades of existence, it has fallen far short of meeting the twin challenges of peace and security and reducing poverty in Africa.
