SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES RESUMPTION OF CYPRUS PROXIMITY TALKS

The following statement was issued this afternoon by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

I am pleased to announce that the proximity talks on Cyprus between Glafkos Clerides and Rauf Denktash will resume in Geneva on 5 July. They will be opened by the Secretary-General.

FIFTH COMMITTEE CONTINUES DEBATE ON PEACEKEEPING SCALE OF ASSESSMENTS, AS FOUR STATES ANNOUNCE VOLUNTARY INCREASE IN SHARE OF COSTS

Four Member States -- Estonia, Hungary, Israel and the Philippines -- announced they would voluntarily increase their financial responsibility for peacekeeping missions, at a meeting of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) this morning. A fifth, Cyprus, made a similar announcement yesterday.
