SECRETARY-GENERAL ‘STRONGLY DEPLORES’ TERRORIST ATTACKS

IN PAKISTAN, RUSSIAN FEDERATION


The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:


The Secretary-General was shocked to learn of the terrorist attacks over the weekend in a Shi’ite mosque in Quetta and during a concert in Moscow.  More than 50 people were killed in Quetta and at least 13 in Moscow.

SECURITY COUNCIL LIBERIA TIMBER BAN COMES INTO FORCE


NEW YORK, 7 July (Department of Political Affairs) -- The President of the Security Council wishes to inform Member States that the measures contained in paragraph 17 of Security Council resolution 1478 (2003), adopted on 6 May 2003 (ban against the import of all round logs and timber products originating in Liberia), came into force at 00:01 eastern daylight time today.

IN MEETING ON DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, SECURITY COUNCIL HEARS

CALL FOR END TO IMPUNITY FOR PERPETRATORS OF VIOLENCE


As there could be no real peace without an end to impunity, perpetrators of violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo must be brought to justice, the Security Council was told this morning during a briefing on the situation in that country.
