SECURITY COUNCIL SPLITS PROSECUTORIAL DUTIES FOR RWANDA, YUGOSLAVIA TRIBUNALS,
UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTING RESOLUTION 1503 (2003)
The Security Council this morning decided to split the prosecutorial duties for the criminal tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia, which to date had been the responsibility of a single official, currently Carla Del Ponte.

ALMATY, KAZAKHSTAN, 27 August -- An historic agreement between countries separated from the sea and adjoining nations with ocean access was concluded today in the central Asian city of Almaty, capping three consecutive days of intensive negotiation.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan left New York on Friday, 22 August, arriving in Rio de Janeiro Saturday morning to attend a memorial service for Sergio Vieira de Mello, his Special Representative for Iraq, who was killed in a bomb attack on the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad on Tuesday, 19 August.
