UN UNIVERSITY TO LAUNCH NEW REPORT ON ‘BIOPROSPECTING IN THE DEEP SEABED’, 9 JUNE


A new report by the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies, Bioprospecting of Genetic Resources in the Deep Seabed, a comprehensive review of scientific, legal and policy issues in deep seabed bioprospecting, will be launched on 9 June at a UNU briefing in Conference Room 6 from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.

MONTREAL CONFERENCE TO CLARIFY SHIPPING DOCUMENTATION RULES

MONTREAL, 30 May (UNEP) -- The 119 member governments to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety are meeting here this week until 3 June to clarify international trade rules for genetically modified commodities.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Khartoum, Sudan, for a three-day visit on Friday, 27 May, from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  On arrival, he told the waiting press that he expected that, after his visits to Darfur and the south, he would “have a better sense, a first hand impression, of what is going on in the country”.

SECURITY COUNCIL EXTENDS UN OPERATION IN BURUNDI UNTIL 1 DECEMBER,


UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTING RESOLUTION 1602 (2005)

 


Welcoming recent positive achievements by the parties in Burundi, including since the deployment of the United Nations Operation (ONUB) there last June, the Security Council this afternoon extended the mandate of the Operation until 1 December 2005.
