The following statement by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was issued today, 11 March:

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon today announced the appointment of John Hendra of Canada Assistant Secretary-General for Policy and Programme at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon today announced the appointment of Ms. Lakshmi Puri of India as Assistant Secretary-General for Intergovernmental Support and Strategic Partnerships at the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced his intention to appoint Abou Moussa of Chad as his Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), based in Libreville, Gabon. UNOCA was established on 1 January 2011 and inaugurated on 2 March 2011.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan as the new Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). He succeeds Sergei Ordzhonikidze, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for the services he has rendered to the Organization and for his commitment in leading UNOG since 2002.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Sahle-Work Zewde of Ethiopia as the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Ms. Zewde will be the first person to be appointed to the newly created position as head of the Organization’s Nairobi Office, at the Under-Secretary-General level.

The United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa will hold its thirty-second ministerial meeting in Sao Tome and Principe from 12 to 16 March. The Committee’s primary objective is to promote peace and security in Central Africa through confidence-building measures, notably in the fields of disarmament and arms limitation.
