The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Vitaly Churkin ( Russian Federation):

On 13 March 2013, the Security Council Committee pursuant to resolutions 1267 (1999) and 1989 (2011) approved the amendments specified with underline in the entry below on its Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2083 (2012) adopted under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations.

To highlight the significance of 25 March, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the United Nations will be hosting a week of activities beginning on Monday, 18 March, with arrival of original copies of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln and the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. The documents will be on display in the Visitors’ Lobby until 25 March. Admission is free.

On 11 March 2013, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1591 (2005) concerning Sudan approved the updates, as underlined below, to the four existing entries on its List of Individuals Subject to the Travel Ban and Assets Freeze.

The sixth annual commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade will be observed at United Nations Headquarters under the theme "Forever Free — Celebrating Emancipation", from Monday, 18 March to Monday, 25 March.

The new Permanent Representative of South Africa to the United Nations, Kingsley Mamabolo, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Bénédicte Frankinet, the new Permanent Representative of Belgium to the United Nations, presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.
