Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by reporting that the United Nations humanitarian needs assessment mission to Bamyan in Afghanistan, which had been announced earlier in the week, was still on hold pending clarification of security and the state of the airport in Bamyan. Alternate routes into Bamyan were being explored.

Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by welcoming the spokesman for the President of the fifty-third session of the General Assembly, Jadranka Mihalic. Mr. Eckhard said she had been present at the General Assembly President's press conference in the morning and would be part of the Spokesman's team for a year.

He had opened the peacekeeping seminar announced on Friday and would be on the podium in the General Assembly for the closing of its current session.
