Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, said at the beginning of today's noon briefing that the Secretary-General was in Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum -- a kind of global business summit attended by top leaders from the private sector, political leaders, academics and journalists. The focus of this year's forum was the Asian financial crisis.

Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by announcing that the Security Council was currently discussing Western Sahara. A draft resolution had been circulated and it was the Council's intention to adopt it on Monday, 26 January.

Fred Eckhard, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, began today's noon briefing by stating that, as had been announced to correspondents late last Friday, the Secretary-General was the keynote speaker at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this morning in a programme dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. The text of his speech had been made available on an embargoed basis.
