No Breakthrough Reached in Effort to Restart Talks between Israelis-Palestinians in Past Month, amid Worrying Developments on Ground, Security Council Told

Warning that the hope for a two-State solution for Israeli-Palestinian peace continued to fade as a stalemate continued both on the ground and at the negotiating table, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process this morning called on the parties to take the necessary steps, despite growing challenges.

Security Council Adopts Resolution 2061 (2012), Extending Mandate of United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq by 12 Months

The Security Council decided today to extend authorization for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for 12 months, keeping the current mandate, but signalling its intention to review it during that period upon request by the country’s Government.

Somalia Transition Will Not Go beyond 20 August 2012, Security Council Reiterates While Extending Mandate of Sanctions Monitoring Group

Reiterating that Somalia’s political transition will not be extended beyond 20 August 2012, the Security Council today extended the mandate of the group monitoring sanctions imposed on that country, explicitly targeting those who obstruct the process, while relaxing funding and equipment restrictions that could negatively affect the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Economic and Social Council Continues General Segment, Takes up Matters Regarding Decolonization, Regional Cooperation, Environment

Continuing its general segment, the Economic and Social Council today took up a host of issues, including implementation of the Declaration on Decolonization, regional cooperation and socioeconomic challenges in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. The Council’s busy day also included the adoption of recommendations on economic and environmental questions. It also adopted five decisions, including one on statistics, three on population and development, and another on cartography.

With the establishment of regional institutions in Darfur as part of the Doha political process, it was now critical to launch initiatives that could consolidate peace and persuade communities outside of the peace process to join, the Joint African Union-United Nations envoy told the Security Council this afternoon.

While Making Measured Progress, Least Developed Countries Still Need Help Building Productive Capacities, High Representative Tells Economic and Social Council

A prosperous future for the world’s 48 poorest nations hinged on continued support for building their productive capacities, improving their access to technology and integrating into their national development plans the Istanbul Programme of Action, which aimed to see at least half of those countries graduate from their “least developed” status by 2030, the Economic and Social Council heard today, as it examined those challenges with a focus on Haiti and South Sudan.

Arms Trade Treaty Conference Yields Composite ‘Working Document’, Prompting Nearly 60 Speakers to Consider Viability, Probable Impact

In what was seen as a major breakthrough in negotiations at the ongoing United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, delegates today received their first comprehensive paper from the Conference President containing elements to be incorporated into a legally binding text, and came together to discuss it in plenary after many informal meetings that lasted into the night and throughout the weekend.

As the United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty entered its final week today, delegates heard an update on negotiations that took place over the weekend.
