United Nations Counts on Diversity of Media to Shape Perceptions, Secretary-General Tells International Seminar on Peace in the Middle East

TOKYO, 9 June — In its work to foster peace in the Middle East, the United Nations counted on the diverse contributions of traditional and new media, which played a critical role in promoting transparency and shaping perceptions of the region’s most important challenges, the head of the United Nations Department of Public Information said today, as he opened a two-day international media seminar in Tokyo.

As General Assembly Reviews Implementation of Declaration on HIV/AIDS, Secretary-General Calls for Universal Access to Health Care

Despite progress in the worldwide fight against HIV and AIDS, the international community should not let confidence turn to complacency, the United Nations Secretary-General warned the General Assembly today. The headway made in the implementation of the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS was the focus of the day’s meeting, with delegates reflecting on advancements made, while lamenting the enormous challenges that remained in the battle against the disease.

Concluding Resumed Session, Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations Recommends Status for 158 Groups, Reinstatement of 21, Withdrawal of 129 for Non-Reporting

The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations today adopted the report of its 2014 resumed session, held from 19 to 28 May, during which it recommended to the Economic and Social Council 158 organizations for consultative status and deferred 153 for further consideration at its regular session in 2015.

Voices of Victims Being Heard as International Criminal Tribunals Race to Meet Deadlines, Transfer Tasks, Top Officials Tell Security Council

Briefing the Security Council on the work of the International Criminal Tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, including the transfer of cases to the Residual Mechanism, judges and prosecutors alike noted progress but stressed the need for continued support, while speakers in debate generally agreed that the voices of victims were being heard and historical records were being preserved.

General Assembly Adopts Text Recognizing Right of Internally Displaced, Refugees from Georgia’s Abkhazia, Tskhinvali Regions to Return Home

Concerned about forced demographic changes, as well as the humanitarian situation resulting from armed conflict in Georgia, the General Assembly recognized today the right of all internally displaced persons, refugees and their descendants to return to their homes throughout that country, including Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.
