Secretary-General Extends Condolences to Family, Namibia’s People, Following Passing of President Hage Gottfried Geingob

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the passing of Hage Gottfried Geingob, President of Namibia.

Dr. Geingob was a respected and principled statesman who dedicated his life to serving and developing his country.

A prominent anti-apartheid activist and pioneer of Africa’s green energy transformation, he became the first Prime Minister of Namibia in 1990.  In 2015, he became the third President of Namibia and served in this position until his passing.

The Secretary-General sends his condolences to Dr. Geingob’s family and to the Government and people of Namibia.
