Secretary-General Calls for Development That Works for All People, Starting with Those Who Need It Most, in Message to Doha Programme of Action Event
Following is the text of UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ video message for the high-level luncheon of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries, in New York today:
Thank you for coming together for this high-level luncheon to advance the ambitious Doha Programme of Action. The Programme represents an ambitious effort to eradicate poverty and ensure that no one is left behind.
At this meeting, you have brought together important partners to focus on implementation, action and results. This focus is especially important as we look ahead to the fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries next March in Doha.
In this time of great global challenge, we must spare no effort to support least developed countries in a number of ways. To reduce inequalities and poverty, and realize the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
To invest in people-centred solutions — from health and education, to decent work, gender equality and social protection. To make available finance, technology and knowhow to help countries climb the development ladder.
To keep pushing for a global financial system that works for all countries and provides access to financing and debt relief. To help least developed countries adapt to a green future and kick-start the renewable energy transition — now. To work to end conflicts and geopolitical divisions that are jeopardizing people’s lives, and blocking recovery, development and prosperity.
I’m counting on you to summon the solidarity and collaborative spirit that defines the Doha Programme of Action. Together we must advance true development and a recovery that works for all people and all countries — starting with those who need it the most.
