Deputy Secretary-General Hails Japan’s Front-Line Support amid Global Response to COVID-19, in Message for Celebration of Emperor’s Birthday

Following is the text of UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s video message for the celebration of the birthday of the Emperor of Japan, today:

His Majesty, distinguished guests,

I am honoured to join you for the celebration of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan’s birthday.  I extend my best wishes to His Majesty, to the Imperial Family and to the people of Japan, as you observe this national holiday.

As the world strives to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, this auspicious occasion is an opportunity to echo His Majesty the Emperor’s sentiments.  As he observed, mutual support, respect and gratitude, especially to those who are saving lives, will help the world move forward.

We will recover better together.  Japan has been on the front lines — supporting the global response to the health crisis and promoting international solidarity as a guiding principle.

As we face many global challenges, the world will continue to benefit from Japan’s experience of reducing risks, building resilience and promoting human security, topics which are close to His Majesty the Emperor.

Once again, my warmest birthday greetings to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, and best wishes to the Japanese people, good health, peace and prosperity for the year ahead.  Thank you.
