New Permanent Representative of France Presents Credentials

Nicolas de Rivière, the new Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today.
Before his latest appointment, Mr. Rivière was Director General of Political and Security Affairs in France’s Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, since 2014, having previously served as Assistant Secretary for the United Nations, international organizations, human rights and La Francophonie between 2011 and 2014. He was also his country’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 2009 to 2010, and Counsellor from 2005 until 2010.
Mr. Rivière served two Foreign Ministers: as Counsellor for International Economic Issues, Asia and the Americas under Michel Barnier, from 2004 to 2005; and as Counsellor for Economic Affairs, Asia and North America under Dominique de Villepin from 2002 until 2004. He was Vice-President of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS-Astrium) from 2001 to 2002.
He was First Secretary in France’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., between 1997 and 2001, prior to which he was based in The Hague as First Secretary in his country’s Embassy in the Netherlands from 1994 to 1997.
Born in 1963, Mr. Rivière holds a law degree from the Institut d’études politiques and graduated from the École nationale d’administration in 1992.
