Activities of Secretary-General in Washington, D.C., 20-22 April
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived in Washington, D.C., from New York on Thursday night, 20 April.
On the morning of Friday, 21 April, the Secretary-General met with United States President Donald J. Trump and United States National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster. The conversations covered several global crises and opened the door for ongoing dialogue between the United States and United Nations leaderships.
Following the visit to the White House, the Secretary-General participated in the World Bank Group-International Monetary Fund (IMF) Spring Meetings. His attendance at the World Bank’s flagship event, “Financing for Peace: Innovations to Tackle Fragility”, focused on the sustaining peace agenda.
The Secretary-General then exchanged views with participants during the Development Committee’s Ministerial Lunch. Following that, he was interviewed for PBS News Hour by news anchor Judy Woodruff. The interview covered a range of topics, including his earlier meeting with President Trump, the Secretary-General’s plans for United Nations reform, and a range of global issues.
On 22 April, the Secretary-General started the day by attending the opening plenary of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC). From the IMFC, he went to the high-level meeting on Famine and Fragility at the World Bank.
In the afternoon, the Secretary-General met with World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, discussing the United Nations and World Bank framework to build resilience and sustain peace in conflict areas. The two leaders also signed the framework during the meeting.
The Secretary-General then participated in a media interview with Bloomberg News, covering the United States-United Nations relationship, global crises and climate change.
The Secretary-General departed Washington, D.C., for New York on Saturday evening.
