Secretary-General Mourns Former President Jalal Talabani, Calling Former Iraq Leader Compassionate, Symbol of National Unity

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General is saddened by the news of the passing of the former President of Iraq, His Excellency Jalal Talabani.

The Secretary-General extends his condolences to the family of Mr. Talabani and to the Government and people of Iraq.

Mr. Talabani will be remembered as a compassionate political leader and a symbol of Iraqi unity who made a significant contribution to democracy, dialogue and mutual understanding amongst all Iraqi communities.
