Condemning Deadly Attack on Peacekeepers in Mali, Secretary-General Urges Expedited Implementation of Peace Accord to Isolate Terrorist Groups

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres:

The Secretary-General condemns today’s attack against a convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), in the Gao region, killing three Bangladeshi peacekeepers and seriously injuring five others.

The Secretary-General conveys his condolences to the Government of Bangladesh and to the bereaved families.  He wishes swift recovery to the injured.

The Secretary-General recalls that Security Council resolution 2374 (2017) of 5 September provides for the imposition of sanctions against entities or individuals obstructing the implementation of the peace agreement and attacking United Nations personnel.

The Secretary-General reaffirms the United Nations' determination to support efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and security in Mali.  He urges the Government and the signatory armed groups to expedite the implementation of the peace agreement so as to isolate the terrorist groups and other entities bent on undermining the peace and reconciliation process.
