Secretary-General Urges Support for Proposed Global Environment Compact to Ensure Well-Being, Dignity, Prosperity of All
Following are UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ remarks on the Global Pact for the Environment, in New York today:
The Global Pact for the Environment, proposed by the Government of France, will capture this vital commitment in a universal text. It is about our duty of care to provide an environment that supports the health, well-being, dignity and prosperity of everyone on this planet. Let us support this worthy initiative.
La concrétisation de toutes nos aspirations à la paix, à la prospérité et au développement durable suppose que nous puissions vivre sur une planète saine et féconde. Au cours des 60 dernières années, 40 % des guerres civiles ont été liées à la dégradation de l’environnement.
Cette année, 20 millions de personnes frappées par des phénomènes météorologiques viendront s’ajouter aux 65 millions de personnes qui ont dû partir de chez elles à cause de conflits ou de persécutions.
Presque tous les emplois et toutes les opportunités économiques dépendent de l’utilisation que nous faisons des ressources naturelles. Mais l’érosion a fait disparaître un tiers des terres agricoles. Et il y aura bientôt plus de plastique que de poissons dans nos mers.
La biodiversité disparaît à un rythme mille fois plus rapide que le taux naturel. Quatre-vingt-dix pour cent de la population respire un air pollué. Et nous sommes tous touchés par les changements climatiques. Notre seul espoir de régler ces problèmes, c’est d’unir nos forces pour protéger l’environnement. Cette idée fait déjà l’objet d’un consensus mondial.
This understanding is common to both the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change — as it was underlined by my predecessors. But, the clock is ticking and we are too slow.
In the coming months, we have the climate change conference in Bonn, President Macron’s climate summit in Paris and the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi. We urgently need to build on these events with even stronger, more coordinated action to reach our 2030 targets.
