Activities of Secretary-General in Haiti, 15 October

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon left Washington, D.C., on 15 October for Haiti to visit communities affected by hurricane Matthew.

The Secretary-General and his wife, Madam Ban Soon-taek, were greeted at Port-au-Prince’s airport by Prime Minister Enex Jean Charles and other officials.  They immediately boarded a helicopter of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) to fly to the southern city of Les Cayes, where the Secretary-General visited a high school hosting 500 people who lost their home in the disaster.

Back in Port-au-Prince, during a press conference with provisional President Jocelerme Privert, he said he was disappointed by the response of the international community so far and also expressed his concern regarding a rise in the transmission of cholera in the aftermath of the hurricane.

He then left Haiti for Quito, Ecuador, to participate in Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development.
