Activities of Secretary-General in Canada, 16-17 September

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon flew on Friday, 16 September, from New York to Montréal, Canada, to participate in the Fifth Replenishment Conference of the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Upon arrival, the Secretary-General co-hosted an official dinner for Heads of State and Heads of Government with Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada.

The next morning, on Saturday, 17 September, the Secretary-General addressed the Conference, saying that the Global Fund’s example of working for countries, communities and groups most in need provided a firm foundation for the new era of opportunity that began this year with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  (See Press Release SG/SM/18070.)

The Secretary-General then held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during which he commended Canada for its commitment to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda as well as on the issue of climate change.

The Secretary-General then met with Fang Liu, Secretary-General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and Dr. Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, President of the ICAO Council, as well as with the Mayor of Montréal, Denis Coderre.

He then flew back to New York where he arrived on Saturday afternoon.
