Activities of Secretary-General in Kenya, Including Stopover in Malawi, 17 July

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon left Kigali, Rwanda, for Nairobi, Kenya, on 17 July for the opening of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD 14). 

In his remarks at the event, he said that UNCTAD — with its integrated approach to trade and development — has a vital role to play in implementing the 2030 Agenda, and stressed that trade, finance, technology and investment can be positive forces to end poverty.  (See Press Release SG/SM/17933.)

The Secretary-General also addressed the press in Nairobi following a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta, thanking him for his leadership and personal engagement alongside the United Nations to ensure that peace returns to Juba and the rest of South Sudan.

The Secretary-General left Nairobi that evening for Durban, South Africa, to attend the AIDS 2016 Conference.  At a refuelling stop in Lilongwe, Malawi, the Secretary-General met George Chaponda, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Affairs.
