Secretary-General, in Message to World Martial Arts Games, Underlines Importance of Promoting Peace, Harmony, Prosperity through Sports

Following is the text of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s video message to the 2016 World Martial Arts Masterships, in Cheongju, Republic of Korea, today:

I am pleased to send warm greetings to the 2016 World Martial Arts Masterships.  At this time of war, poverty and discrimination, there are reasons for hope.

Last year, leaders of the world adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, our plan for a life of dignity for all.  They also adopted the historic Paris Agreement to address climate change.  These pacts can open a new future.

We need all partners to succeed.  The United Nations has been promoting peace, harmony and prosperity through sports.  Martial arts are based on a healthy mind and body and respect for one’s opponent.  This is an important element of peace, prosperity and the rule of law, which we can learn and practise through sports.

As you train and compete, I count on you to spread this message of respect for our planet and for all people, everywhere.
