Common Effort Needed for Common Good, Secretary-General Tells Centennial Event, Noting that United Nations Counts on Lions Clubs Support of 2030 Agenda

Following is UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s message to the Lions Clubs International Convention, in Chicago today:

I am delighted to send greetings to the Lions Clubs International on the occasion of your 100th anniversary celebration.

The United Nations deeply values our collaboration with Lions Clubs International.  Our relationship dates back to the adoption of the United Nations Charter more than 70 years ago in San Francisco, when Lions Clubs helped to formulate the non-governmental section of our founding document.

Since then, Lions Clubs International and the United Nations have worked together on many successful humanitarian ventures.  Lions has, over time, contributed to UNICEF [United Nations Children’s Fund] programmes and expanded its efforts beyond those valuable contributions.  I am so encouraged to see that you are helping children to grow, learn and enjoy a better quality of life through a variety of initiatives, including Sight First, which has helped restore vision to more than 30 million people worldwide.

Looking ahead, the United Nations counts on Lions members to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.  The Sustainable Development Goals build on the achievements of the Millennium Development Goals to promote equitable and inclusive progress for all humankind on a healthy planet.  Success will depend on innovative and effective partnerships.

I greatly appreciate the work you are already doing with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the support you provide through your annual Lions Clubs International Day at the United Nations.

In this time of considerable social, economic, humanitarian and environmental challenge, we need common effort for the common good.  The altruism embodied by the Lions Clubs is a constant reminder of the tremendous potential for mutual support that exists among humanity.  By working together, we can create a world of dignity and opportunity for all.

Thank you once again for your support.  The United Nations looks forward to the contributions you will continue to make and I wish you all the best for a memorable anniversary celebration.
