Security Council Press Statement on Libya

The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Román Oyarzun Marchesi (Spain):

The members of the Security Council welcomed the announcement by United Nations Special Representative Bernardino León of the proposed names for the Presidency Council of the Libyan Government of National Accord.

The members of the Security Council commended the dialogue participants on finalizing the Political Agreement for the Government of National Accord after comprehensive and broad consultations, which represented a genuine opportunity for the parties to resolve Libya’s political, security and institutional crises.

The members of the Security Council called on all Libyans, representatives of the people, political parties, municipalities and civil society, to unite wholeheartedly and in a spirit of reconciliation behind this settlement, which represents the aspirations and hopes of the Libyan people.

The members of the Security Council urged all Libyan parties to endorse and sign the Political Agreement, and to work together to quickly form the Government of National Accord.

The members of the Security Council thanked the Special Representative to the Secretary General, Bernardino León, and his team for their efforts in this United Nations-facilitated, Libyan-led dialogue process.

The members of the Security Council expressed their gratitude to those Member States that facilitated the dialogue, in particular the Kingdom of Morocco for its efforts in advancing the agreement, including through hosting the Libyan dialogue.

The members of the Security Council encouraged the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to advance relevant efforts for coordination of international assistance to the future Government of National Accord.

The members of the Security Council recalled resolutions 2174 (2014), 2213 (2015) and 2214 (2015), and noted that the Sanctions Committee is prepared to sanction those who threaten Libya’s peace, stability and security or that undermine the successful completion of its political transition.

The members of the Security Council reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya.
