Security Council Sanctions Committee Concerning South Sudan Meets with Special Representatives for Children and Armed Conflict, Sexual Violence in Conflict

During its informal consultations on 8 May 2015, the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 2206 (2015) concerning South Sudan was briefed by Leila Zerrougui, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, and Zainab Hawa Bangura, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict.

The purpose of the briefings was to begin a dialogue with the Special Representatives in pursuance of paragraph 20 of resolution 2206 (2015), by which the Security Council requested the Special Representatives to share relevant information with the Committee in accordance with paragraph 7 of resolution 1960 (2010) and paragraph 9 of resolution 1998 (2011).

During the meeting, several delegations expressed appreciation for the work of the Special Representatives and the information they had provided, and looked forward to receiving further briefings and communications from the Special Representatives.

Committee members acknowledged that by the provisions of paragraphs 7 (d) and (e) of resolution 2206 (2015), individuals and entities can be subject to possible financial and travel sanctions for actions such as the targeting of civilians including women and children; acts of violence such as killing, rape or other sexual violence; as well as the use or recruitment of children by armed groups or armed forces.
