United Nations Light Show Projections on Sustainable Development Goals
Ahead of the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit from 25-27 September, and to mark the seventieth anniversary of the United Nations, a 10-minute film introducing the sustainable development goals will be projected onto United Nations Headquarters, north façade of the Secretariat building, and west façade of the General Assembly building. The projection brings to life each of the 17 goals to raise awareness about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
“These projections on the sustainable development goals are a beacon to the world carrying an historic message from the United Nations — that the nations of the world are committed to ensuring lives of dignity for all people and a healthy planet for future generations,” said United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. “The global goals provide a unique opportunity to end poverty, reduce inequality, build peaceful societies and fix climate change. All nations and all citizens have a role to play to achieve these global goals. We hope that the message of the goals will reach everyone on the planet this week,” he added.
The projections have been developed in collaboration with the Global Goals campaign and 59 Productions. The filmed footage will be edited into a four-minute film to be shown at the Global Citizen Festival on 26 September and broadcast around the world as part of international coverage of the event.
The Global Goals campaign aims to reach 7 billion people in seven days with news of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
A special viewing event of the massive projections will be held at Headquarters on 22 September from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The light show projections can be best viewed from 1st Avenue and 45th Street.
More than 150 world leaders will participate in the Sustainable Development Summit to officially adopt the historic 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, a people-centred, universal, and transformative agenda that calls for action by all countries for all people over the next 15 years in five areas of critical importance: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership.
The new agenda, with 17 sustainable development goals at its core, recognizes that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with a plan that builds economic growth and addresses a range of social needs while tackling climate change.
