Activities of Secretary-General in Denmark, 1-2 November

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, accompanied by Madam Ban Soon‑taek, arrived in Copenhagen around midday on Saturday, 1 November 2014 after an overnight flight from Nairobi with a transfer in London.

After a tour of Rosenborg Castle, a former royal residence, the Secretary-General attended a dinner hosted by Foreign Minister Martin Lidegaard, which was also attended by several Danish chief executive officers from industry, business and finance who had been at the Climate Summit in New York on 23 September.  The Climate, Energy and Buildings Minister, Rasmus Helveg Petersen, was also present at the dinner.

On the morning of Sunday, 2 November, the Secretary-General was briefed by the senior management of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), including Executive Director Grete Faremo.

The Secretary-General was interviewed separately by the Danish newspaper Politiken and the Danish TV2 news network.

The Secretary-General later met with scientists and officials of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), including the Chair, Dr.  Rajendra Pachauri, before launching the IPCC Synthesis Report.

The Secretary-General also met with Climate Minister Petersen before meeting with Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Christiansborg Palace, the Office of the Prime Minister.

Next, the Secretary-General had a working lunch with Foreign Minister Lidegaard before speaking to reporters with the Foreign and Climate Ministers.  This was a prelude to delivering the keynote address at the opening session of the Copenhagen Energy Security Dialogues.  (See Press Release SG/SM/16304.)

The Secretary-General later met the Foreign Minister of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, who was also attending the Dialogues event.

Before leaving Copenhagen for Vienna the same evening, the Secretary-General visited the Den Blaa Planet Aquarium.
