Secretary-General Appoints Lise Grande of United States Deputy Special Representative for Iraq

United Nations Secretary‑General Ban Ki‑moon today announced the appointment of Lise Grande of the United States as his Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).  Ms. Grande will also serve as the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq.

She will succeed Jacqueline Badcock of the United Kingdom who has served in Iraq since May 2012.  The Secretary‑General is grateful for Ms. Badcock’s leadership in addressing the humanitarian and development needs in Iraq.

Ms. Grande brings to this position extensive experience in countries experiencing conflict and transition, having served in some of the United Nations’ largest humanitarian operations and in peacekeeping missions.  She has also worked on recovery and reconstruction and in development.

She currently serves as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative and United Nations Resident Coordinator in India since August 2012.  She previously served as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary‑General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan (2011‑2012); Deputy Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, South Sudan (2008‑2011); Head of the United Nations Integrated Office in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2005‑2008); and Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia (2003‑2005).

Ms.‑Grande holds degrees from Stanford University, California, and the New School for Social Research, New York.
