Secretary-General Appoints Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas of Uruguay Assistant Secretary-General, Controller

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki‑moon announced today the appointment of Bettina Tucci Bartsiotas, born in Uruguay and a United States national, as Assistant Secretary-General, Controller, Office of Programme Planning, Budget and Accounts, Department of Management.  Ms. Bartsiotas will replace María Eugenia Casar, who has been appointed as Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Ms. Bartsiotas brings with her a wealth of senior-level international experience in programme planning, budgeting and financial management, and was instrumental in setting the strategy and direction on IPSAS [International Public Sector Accounting Standards] and ERP [enterprise resource planning] implementation.

Since 2011, Ms. Bartsiotas has served as Director of Budget and Finance/Chief Financial Officer at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).  Previous to that she was Deputy Director/Head of Budget, Division of Financial and Administrative Management, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).  She held several senior positions in IAEA from 1994 to 2008 and prior to that, was self-employed as a Certified Public Accountant.  She also worked in the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), both in Washington, D.C.

Ms. Bartsiotas holds a Master of Business Administration degree in finance and investments from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and business administration from the American University in Washington, D.C.
