New Permanent Representative of Germany Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations, Harald Braun, today presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Until his appointment, Mr. Braun was State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin since July 2011, having served as Director General for Management in the same Office from 2010 until 2011.  He held the post of Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission at Germany’s Embassy in Paris from 2008 to 2009.

Beginning in March 2008, Mr. Braun was a research professor in global studies and diplomacy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  He was Corporate Senior Vice President with Siemens AG Munich from 2005 until 2008.

Between 2003 to 2005, Mr. Braun was Deputy Foreign and Security Policy Adviser to the Federal Chancellor, having served as Ambassador-at-Large from 2002 to 2003.  He also saw diplomatic service at Germany’s embassies in Washington, D.C., (1997-2002), Burundi (1991-1992), London (1985-1988) and Beirut (1983-1985), having joined the foreign service in 1981.

He studied economics, history and literature in Tübingen and New York (1975-1980), having undergone a commercial apprenticeship with IBM Germany from 1973 to 1975.

Born in 1952, Mr. Braun is married and has three children.
