Activities of Secretary-General in Uganda, 24 May

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, together with the President of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, arrived in Entebbe, Uganda, in the morning on Friday, 24 May.

This visit to Uganda was the last leg of a three-day United Nations-World Bank joint visit to the Great Lakes region of Africa to support the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region.

The Secretary-General and the President of the World Bank met President Yoweri Museveni and his Cabinet at the State House in Entebbe.

In a joint press conference with President Museveni, the Secretary-General said that as Chair of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, President Museveni has been instrumental in striving to resolve the crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and in reaching agreement on the landmark Framework.  He said that now the focus is on implementation of this Framework Agreement and that he counts on the continued leadership of President Museveni and all regional leaders.

Later, the Secretary-General and the President of the World Bank had an interaction with U-reporters and reintegrated ex-combatants.  U-report is a text message innovation designed to give youth a voice on issues that matter to them.

Then the Secretary-General and the President of the World Bank had a meeting with a group of ambassadors, development partners and representatives of regional organizations.

The United Nations-World Bank joint visit concluded in Entebbe in late afternoon on 24 May.

Later, the Secretary-General did a tour of the United Nations Base in Entebbe, before departing that same day to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
