Secretary-General Appoints Modibo Touré of Mali as Special Adviser
to Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Great Lakes Region
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Modibo Touré of Mali as Special Adviser, at the level of Assistant Secretary-General, to the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to the Great Lakes Region. Since January 2013, Mr. Touré has been serving as the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative ad interim of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in Nairobi, Kenya.
As Special Adviser, based in Nairobi, Kenya, Mr. Touré will be working closely with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, Mary Robinson, assisting her efforts towards the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the region, signed by 11 countries of the Great Lakes region on 24 February, in Addis Ababa.
Mr. Touré brings more than 22 years of professional experience in international economic development, having worked in a wide range of countries with UNDP in Africa, including Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Rwanda, Chad, Ethiopia and the Central African Republic. He has also worked in high-level positions in the African Development Bank and served as Minister of New Technologies, Telecommunications and Post Office in Mali.
Mr. Touré holds a master’s degree in business administration from Vanderbilt University, United States, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from École nationale d’administration in Bamako, Mali.
Born in 1959, Mr. Touré is married and has three children.
