Preparatory Committee for ‘Rio+20’ Conference Elects Three Bureau Members
The Preparatory Committee for the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development today elected three members of its Bureau.
Elected by acclamation were the following: Kim Sook (Republic of Korea) from the Group of Asian States as Co‑Chair; and Bedrich Moldan (Czech Republic) from the Group of Eastern European States and Keith Christie (Canada) from the Group of Western European and Other States as Vice-Chairs.
The Preparatory Committee also made an oral decision to invite intergovernmental organizations that had been accredited to the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development to participate as observers in the preparatory process for the forthcoming Conference, known as “Rio+20”, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012.
John Ashe ( Antigua and Barbuda), who co‑chaired the meeting, made opening remarks before the Preparatory Meeting adjourned for informal intersessional discussions on the compilation document, or draft text, that would serve as a basis for the political outcome to be adopted in Rio.
