Biographical Note


New permanent representative of Peru presents credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Peru to the United Nations, Gonzalo Gutiérrez, today presented his credentials to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon


At the time of his appointment, Mr. Gutiérrez was his country’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs.


A career diplomat, Mr. Gutiérrez is a graduate of the Diplomatic Academy of Peru, and has a master’s degree in international policy from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, Washington, D.C.  He has also pursued graduate studies at the London School of Economics.


He has served as Under-Secretary for Economic Affairs, Executive Director of the Bureau for Trade Promotion, Acting Undersecretary for the Americas, and Director of South America at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Mr. Gutiérrez has previously served at the Peruvian Mission to the United Nations in New York and at the Peruvian embassies to the United States and Chile.  He has also been Deputy Permanent Representative of Peru to the international organizations headquartered in Geneva.


The envoy was also a professor at Peru’s Diplomatic Academy teaching the course “International Economic Organizations”, is the author of several academic articles on economic and trade issues, and the recipient of several honours and awards by the Peruvian, Chilean, Paraguayan and Spanish Governments.


The new Peruvian ambassador was born in Lima, Peru, in 1955.
