New permanent representative of CHINA presents credentials

The new Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, Zhang Yesui, presented his credentials today to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Since 2003, Mr. Zhang has been serving as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing, where his areas of responsibility included policy research, Africa, Europe, North America and Oceania Affairs, arms control and international treaty and law.

From 2000 to 2003, he served as Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, in charge of administration, protocol and personnel.  Prior to that, he was Director-General in charge of the Protocol Department in the same Ministry, from 1996.  From 1992 to 1996, Mr. Zhang was Counsellor and Deputy Director-General, Department of International Organizations, in the Foreign Ministry; and from 1988 to 1992, he was First Secretary and Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations in New York.

He also served as Third Secretary, Deputy Office Director and First Secretary in the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from 1982 1988, after having served as Attaché at his country’s Embassy in the United Kingdom from 1976 to 1982.

China’s new envoy studied at the London School of Economics from 1975 to 1976 and is a graduate of Beijing’s Foreign Studies University.

Born in Hubei Province of China in October 1953, Mr. Zhang is married with a daughter.
