Biographical Note


New Permanent Representative of Sweden Presents Credentials

Anders Lidén, the new Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.


Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Lidén served since 2002 as Director-General for Political Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  He was Sweden’s Ambassador to Israel and Cyprus from 1999 to 2002, as well as Chargé d’Affaires at Sweden’s Embassy in Jordan in 1999. 


Mr. Lidén served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations in New York from 1996 to 1999.  In 1996, he was Ambassador, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Coordinator of Sweden’s campaign for election to the United Nations Security Council. 


Having joined the Foreign Ministry in 1979, Mr. Lidén has held a number of posts in the Ministry’s Political Department, including First Secretary (1983-1987), Counsellor (1991-1992), Deputy Assistant Under-Secretary (1992-1993) and Assistant Under-Secretary (1993-1996). 


He received a PhD in political science from the University of Lund, Sweden, in 1980.


Born in 1949 in Oskarshamn, Sweden, Mr. Lidén is married with four children.
