NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF MAURITIUS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19990203 Biographical NoteAnund Priyay Neewoor, the new Permanent Representative of Mauritius to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to assuming his current post, since December 1996, Mr. Neewoor was Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Mauritius. From July to December of that year, he served as Ambassador in the Foreign Ministry in charge of multi- lateral economic affairs relating to the European Union, the Southern African Development Community, and the Indian Rim, among others. He was the Ambassador to the United States from August 1993 to June 1996, and, concurrently, accredited to Canada and Guyana as High Commissioner.
For three years, beginning in July 1990, Mr. Neewoor held an appointment as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in New Delhi. From 1988 to 1993, also in New Delhi, he was Dean of the African Ambassadors, and from November 1983 to July 1993, he was High Commissioner for Mauritius in India. During that period, he was also accredited as High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, and as Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Myanmar, Nepal and Thailand.
Mr. Neewoor also served as Ambassador to Pakistan from January to October 1983, and as Minister-Counsellor at the Mauritius Embassy in Washington, D.C. He was the First Secretary at the Mauritius High Commission in New Delhi from 1975 to 1981, and Second Secretary at the Mauritius High Commission in London from 1973 to 1975. Following his country's independence in 1968, Mr. Neewoor was recruited for diplomatic training.
At the outset of his training, Mr. Neewoor attended a course in diplomacy and international relations at Makerere University in Uganda under a fellowship from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Then, in 1969, he was granted another Fellowship from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. That same year, he enroled in the in-service training with the External Affairs Ministry of Canada. In 1970, he joined the Ministry of External Affairs, Tourism and Emigration in connection with the United Nations and West Asia.

As a member of the Mauritius delegation, Mr. Neewoor attended a number of wide-ranging conferences, including most recently, the First Conference of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in May 1997. Prior to serving his Government, he was a teacher and principal of secondary school in Mauritius from 1964 to 1967.
Born on 26 June 1940 in Mauritius, Mr. Neewoor is married and has three children.
