NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF INDONESIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19970806 Biographical Note

Makarim Wibisono, the new Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He has been Deputy Permanent Representative at Indonesia's United Nations Mission since 1994.

Prior to his United Nations assignment, Mr. Wibisono was the Director for Multilateral Economic Cooperation in Indonesia's Department of Foreign Affairs (1993-1994). As Minister Counsellor, he was also head of the Economic Division at Indonesia's United Nations Mission from 1991 to 1993, and head of the Information Division at Indonesia's Embassy in Washington, D.C., from 1988 to 1991.

Mr. Wibisono began his career in 1970 as Editor of Express News Magazine in Jakarta. He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1972 as head of the United States desk, becoming head of the North American Section in 1976. In 1977, he became head of the Information and Cultural Division at his country's embassy in Brasilia. Within the Foreign Affairs Department, he has also been Deputy Director of Trade and Exhibitions (1981-1982) and Deputy Director for Information Affairs (1987-1988).

Throughout the years, Mr. Wibisono has participated in a wide range of international bodies and conferences, including several sessions of the General Assembly and meetings of the Security Council, as well as the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo. Other meetings include a summit meeting of the Islamic Conference Organization at Dakar, Senegal, and a standing ministerial conference of the Non-Aligned Movement at Bali, Indonesia, both during 1993.

Mr. Wibisono holds a Ph.D from Ohio State University (1987), where he also received as Master of Arts degree in political economy (1986). He also holds a Master's degree in advanced international studies from John Hopkins University in Washington D.C. (1984), as well as a degree in international relations from Gajahmada University in Jogjakarta, Indonesia (1970).

Born in Mataram, Indonesia, on 8 May 1947, Mr. Wibisono is married and has three children.
