NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SWEDEN PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19970804 Biographical NoteHans Dahlgren, the new Permanent Representative of Sweden to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Mr. Dahlgren had been State Secretary to Sweden's Prime Minister since 1996.
A graduate of the Stockholm School of Economics, Mr. Dahlgren was Chairman of the Board of the Office of Central Services to the Ministries from 1994 to 1996. He was Secretary-General of the Commission on Global Governance and head of its Geneva secretariat, from 1992 to 1994.
During 1990, he chaired the International Working Group on the Declaration of the World Summit on Children.
From 1986 to 1989, he was Executive Secretary of the Palme Commission on Disarmament and Security Issues. He was also Ambassador in the Prime Minister's Office and adviser on international affairs to Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson from 1986 to 1991.
From 1983 to 1986, Mr. Dahlgren was Assistant Under-Secretary of State in the Prime Minister's Office and adviser to the Prime Minister on international affairs. In 1982, he worked for a year as Press Secretary to Prime Minister Olof Palme.
From 1977 to 1982, Mr. Dahlgren was press secretary to the Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Mr. Palme.
Mr. Dahlgren worked as a journalist from 1971 to 1977, including four years as political correspondent at "Aktuellt", the daily television news programme of TV One. In 1975, he spent a year as First Secretary at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and assistant to the Foreign Minister, before rejoining "Aktuellt" as Deputy Foreign Editor until 1977.
From 1967 to 1968, he was President of the Swedish Student Union. He graduated from the Stockholm School of Economics in 1971.
Mr. Dahlgren was born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1948.
