FIFTY NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS APPROVED FOR ASSOCIATION WITH DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC INFORMATION

19970327 The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations of the Department of Public Information (DPI) met on Tuesday, 24 March, and decided to grant DPI association to 50 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) representing 20 countries. That brings the total number of NGOs associated with DPI to 1,514.

The NGOs newly associated with DPI come from the following countries: 18 from the United States; 9 from Russian Federation; three from Italy; two each from Bangladesh, Egypt and Iran; one each from Belgium, Cameroon, Canada, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Romania, Saudia Arabia, Senegal, Spain, United Kingdom and the Vatican.

Among those NGOs, a large number work with human rights issues, with women and youth, as well as in the environmental, religious, or educational fields. For the first time, DPI granted association to academic and health organizations, such as the Royal College of Nursing (United Kingdom), with over 300,000 members, DePaul University for New Learning (United States), the American University in Cairo (Egypt), and The Hague Model United Nations (Netherlands).

Organizations eligible for association with DPI must share the ideals of the United Nations Charter, operate solely on a non-for-profit basis, and demonstrate an interest in United Nations issues. In addition, they must have a proven ability to reach large or specialized audiences with well-developed information programmes, as well as the commitment and means to include effective information programmes about the United Nations in their work.

Among the new associates, several organizations have very large memberships or work in a network with other organizations, thus boosting their outreach. For example, the African American Islamic Institute (Senegal) has 500,000 individual members; the Journalists' Union of Russia (Russian Federation) has 80,000 individuals and 600 institutional members; the Order of St. Augustine (Vatican) has been operating since 1244, currently in 41 countries; and The Hague International Model United Nations organizes simulations of the work of major organs of the United Nations involving 180 schools in 90 countries. For the first time, a number of NGOs have listed Internet World Wide Web sites as their means for public information outreach.
