UNFPA ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF 1996 INTERNATIONAL POSTER CONTEST

19960607 NEW YORK, 6 June (UNFPA) -- Fifteen winning entries for the fifth international poster contest sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) were announced by the Fund today. The winning designs, all by entrants of six years of age and older, were selected from among 272 entries from 66 countries submitted on the theme "Where we live now", which was chosen in recognition of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) currently under way in Istanbul. The entries were divided into five categories, according to age. The first round of the judging was done at the national level, with only the designs of the first-place winners in each category being submitted to the UNFPA headquarters in New York for the final judging. The winners in category I -- 6 to 8 years -- are Borte Gurbuz (Turkey), 1st prize; Utan Phaoboonkerd (Thailand), 2nd prize; and Molly Gambhir (India), 3rd prize. For category II -- 9 to 12 years -- the honours go to Sukhbatyn Munkhbaatar (Mongolia), 1st prize; Dianna Mastracci (Zimbabwe), 2nd prize; and Ana Itzel Del Valle Morales (Mexico), 3rd prize. For the third age group -- 13-15 years -- the winners are Kemas Yulian Maulana (Indonesia), 1st prize; Kana Takahashi (Japan), 2nd prize; and Baasansurengiin Bolormaa (Mongolia), 3rd prize. For category IV -- 16-18 years -- the winning entries were submitted by Modibo Doumbia (Mali), 1st prize; Ouassila Bezzia (Algeria), 2nd prize; and Harinrat Malithip (Thailand), 3rd prize. For category V, for those over 18 years of age, the winners are Iván Cabalceta Román (Costa Rica), 1st prize; Yogi Setiawan (Indonesia), 2nd prize; and Denis Fuentes (Philippines), 3rd prize. All winners will receive a certificate, a United Nations fiftieth anniversary leather folder and a population clock and monitor. Selected designs from among the registered entries will be used in UNFPA's information materials. The international poster contest was first held in 1992 with cooperation from governments, non-governmental and other organizations concerned with population. One of the goals of the contest is to promote awareness and understanding of population issues, particularly the relationship between environmental and social problems and population. The international poster awards jury consisted of a representative from the office of UNFPA's Executive Director, other officials from the Fund and the United Nations Population Division, as well as from the New York-based Population Council.
