INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SOLIDARITY WITH PALESTINIAN PEOPLE TO BE OBSERVED AT HEADQUARTERS ON 29 NOVEMBER

19951127 Palestinian Rights Committee to Hold Solemn Meeting

A solemn meeting of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People will be held on Wednesday, 29 November, to commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

The screening of films and an art exhibit will also form part of the commemoration.

Invitations to address the meeting of the Committee have been extended to the President of the General Assembly, the President of the Security Council, a representative of Palestine, the Chairman of the Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting the Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories, several intergovernmental organizations, and the International Coordinating Committee for Non- Governmental Organizations on the Question of Palestine.

The proceedings will be published in a special bulletin of the United Nations Division for Palestinian Rights in commemoration of the observance.

The International Day is observed annually in accordance with General Assembly resolution 32/40 B, adopted in 1977. All Member States, United Nations bodies and specialized agencies, observers and non-governmental organizations are invited to attend the meeting.

In further commemoration of the International Day of Solidarity, the Committee has arranged the screening of a series of films during the week, beginning 29 November, at 1 p.m. at the Dag Hammarskjold Library Auditorium.

In addition, an art exhibit presented by the Committee in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the United Nations will be opened at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, 29 November, in the public lobby of the General Assembly building. Entitled "Generations", the exhibit will be on view until 6 p.m., Tuesday, 5 December.

Barakat, Fayez El-Sirsawi and Jawad Al-Malhi -- will be presented in the exhibit. The history of the Palestinian people, the richness and vibrancy of their society and culture, are captured in the distinct collection of 27 paintings and sculptures.

The exhibit will be opened by Keba Birane Cisse (Senegal), Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. A statement will also be made by a representative of Palestine. The President of the General Assembly, the President of the Security Council, all permanent representatives to the United Nations and high-level Secretariat officials have been invited to the opening. The opening is expected to last about 45 minutes.

After the statements, the Chairman of the Committee and the representative of Palestine will escort invited guests through the exhibit.

Tayseer Barakat, one of the artists who is also coordinating the exhibit, will be participating at the opening and will be available during the week of the exhibition to provide information on the work of the five artists.
