UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY TO HOST TOKYO SYMPOSIUM ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT

19951117 Sustainable agriculture and rural development is the subject of a symposium to be held at the United Nations University headquarters in Tokyo, from 27 to 29 November, in cooperation with the Japan Institute of Irrigation and Drainage.

The symposium will focus on the development of agriculture in relation to the need for environmental conservation. Agricultural land and water resources have become a contentious environmental issue in recent years with rapid world population growth and increasing demands for food.

Shawki Barghouti, Chief of the Agriculture and Water Division, South Asia Region II of the World Bank, and Tan Sri Dato'Ir Haji Shahrizaila, Chairman of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage, will give keynote addresses. Two workshops on "Agricultural Land" and on "Water" will be held during the three-day meeting. Professor Hikaru Tsutsui of Kinki University will read the statement issued at the end of the symposium.
