NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION - UNITED NATIONS PARTNERSHIP CELEBRATED 20 NOVEMBER
19951116 A non-governmental organization (NGO) working celebration for the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations will take place on Monday, 20 November, organized by the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations (CONGO) and the Department of Public Information (DPI)/NGO Executive Committee, with the support of the United Nations Fiftieth Anniversary Secretariat.The working celebration, entitled, "The NGO/UN Partnership: The Way Forward", will bring together NGO representatives, governments, and the United Nations system simultaneously in two locations, the Palais des Nations in Geneva and United Nations Headquarters in New York, with the two gatherings linked for two hours by satellite for both audio and visual communication. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali will address both gatherings via the satellite link.
At Headquarters, the working celebration will be held in the Economic and Social Council Chamber from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. In addition to the interaction with the Secretary-General, beginning at 10 a.m., the programme will examine the following three topics: Global Conferences and grass-roots action; empowerment and partnership at global, regional, national, and local levels; and "We the Peoples...NGOS and the General Assembly". All three topics will be initially addressed by panellists representing NGOs, governments, and the United Nations system, followed by interventions from the floor in which all participants will be welcome to speak. The programme will close with a summation by the rapporteurs of the three panels.
The satellite linked segment will be opened by President of CONGO, Robert Harris, and the Chair of the DPI/NGO Executive Committee, Gordon Klopf. The Secretary-General will be introduced by the First Vice-President of CONGO, Afaf Mahfouz. the Preparatory Committee for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the United Nations, Richard Butler, and Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for Public Policy, Gillian Martin Sorensen.
The panel for global conferences and grass-roots actions will consist of: the Director of the Centre for Women's Global Leadership, Charlotte Bunch; the Director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), Noeleen Heyzer; and the representative at the United Nations of the Franciscans International, Mary Theresa Plante. The panel will be chaired and moderated by Preminder N. Jain, International Mahavir Jain Mission.
The panel for empowerment and partnership at global, regional, national, and local levels will consist of: the representative at the United Nations of the All India Women's Conference, Sudha Acharya; the representative of the Friends World Committee for Consultation, Berit Collett; and the special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II), Uner Kirdar. The panel will be chaired and moderated by the President of the Economic and Social Council, Ahmad Kamal (Pakistan).
The panel for "We the Peoples...NGOs and the General Assembly", will include the representative at the United Nations for Rotary International, Sylvan R. Barnett, Jr.; First Secretary (Economic Affairs) of the Mission of Canada, Jennifer Irish; Minister Counsellor of the Mission of the Philippines, Ruth Limjuco; and Director of the Africa Division, United Nations Population Fund, and member of the Commission on Global Governance, Marie-Angelique Savane. The panel will be chaired and moderated by the Assistant Secretary- General and Special Political Adviser to the Secretary-General, Rosario Green.
The final session of the working celebration will consist of summation reports from the three panels and will be chaired and moderated by the representative of the World Conference on Religion and Peace, Gloria Garcia.
